HANDMADE AROMATHERAPY EYE BAG
One of my favourite yoga props is the eye bag and today I made my own at home. The weight of the eye bag encourages the eyelids and eyeballs to relax. By blocking out the light, eye bags can help you reach new levels of relaxation during savasana or any reclining restorative posture (such as supta baddha konasana, supta virasana, supta swastikasana, and lying side stretch aka bananasana). I am collaborating with a dear friend of mine who is an aromatherapist to develop a class combining the healing powers of essential oils with yoga. She suggested rose as the aroma to pair with final relaxation in savasana. Rose is a deeply comforting smell that connects us with the divine. It is related to the heart chakra: the energetic center for love, compassion, our higher selves and our intentions.
In the first photo (top left) you can see some of the materials I used.
- Jasmine flowers (left)
- Mung beans (middle)
- Rose and jasmine aroma oil
- Rose petals (right)
- Eye bag before it was filled
In the second photo (top right) you can see the eye bag after I stuffed it. I put about two drops of the rose and jasmine aroma oil onto the mung beans before I spooned them in. This aroma oil is finely crafted by Osha Mae soap and is blended with carrier oils so that it is safe to apply directly to skin. If you are using concentrated rose or jasmine oil, use less.
The third photo (bottom left) is of me in savasana to show the eye bag in action.
Pictured in the bottom right is a frame from Salvador Dali’s painting called “Rose Meditative” (1958)
I will be offering “pay what you want” yoga classes the Nalandabodhi Centre (top) and the second floor of Chebucto Coffee (bottom)!
Starting April 21:
Monday 4-5:30 p.m. @ Nalandabodhi Centre (6218 Quinpool)
Thursday 6:30-8 p.m. @ Chebucto Coffee, 2nd floor (6430 Chebucto Road)
Classes are for all levels. No need to reserve your spot ahead of time, please just show up with your yoga mat. I will choose the type of yoga to guide you through depending on who shows up and how everyone is feeling. This will allow me to accommodate the people that arrive for yoga, no matter what they are experiencing physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I design sequences with sensitivity to the people in the room and any aches or pains, hormonal states, or injuries they may be facing. The metaphor of the ocean reveals how our bodies are always in flux. The ocean waters ebb and flow in response to the gravitational forces at work on our planet. In a similar way, our bodies are constantly changing. By having the freedom to choose the style of class we will practice together, OCEAN YOGA aligns itself with the ever-changing nature of our bodies and the universe. I will draw from my experience with vinyasa flow, hatha, yin, restorative yoga, meditation, and pranayama (breathing exercises) to develop sequences spontaneously that I hope will bring peace, balance, and healing to your life. Watch this space for more updates about guest teachers and adjusters. I have fostered some exciting collaborations with other teachers who I hope to share yoga with soon. Feel free to message me any questions. Thank you for your interest and support - I am really looking forward to doing yoga with you!!!
